Cereal Toppings and Mix-Ins

Practical ways to change cereal flavour, texture and variety using fruit, nuts, seeds, yogurt, spices and mixed cereal bases.

A flexible bowl starts with components. Keep the base simple, then adjust crunch, sweetness, temperature and richness with additions that suit your household.

Fruit

Fresh, frozen, stewed or dried fruit changes sweetness and texture. Frozen fruit can chill milk and soften cereal as it thaws; dried fruit is concentrated and may be sweetened.

Nuts and seeds

These add crunch and flavour but require allergen awareness. Toasted and raw versions taste different; salted products also change the bowl.

Yogurt and cultured products

A spoonful can create a thicker bowl or turn granola into a topping. Check added flavours, sweeteners and storage instructions on the product you use.

Mix two cereals

A small amount of a strongly flavoured or clustered cereal can add interest to a plain base. This also helps use up partial packages before they become stale.
