Bran and Shredded Cereals

Compare bran-style cereals and shredded grain biscuits by ingredient base, density, texture and package claims.

Bran-style cereal is not one standardized recipe. Some products are mostly whole grain, some add isolated bran, and others combine several flours and sweeteners.

What bran means

Bran is the outer layer of a grain kernel. A package may use wheat bran, oat bran, rice bran or another source. The word alone does not show how much is present or what else forms the cereal.

Shredded cereals

Shredded cereals are made by forming cooked grain into strands or layered biscuits. Many are simple, while flavoured or filled versions can have longer ingredient lists.

Texture and serving density

Dense flakes, sticks and biscuits may look smaller in the bowl than puffed cereals at the same weight. Use grams for comparison rather than judging only by volume.
